Key Outcomes
Designed and deployed a [multi-protocol asset tracking platform] combining BLE (indoor), GPS (outdoor), and LoRaWAN (long-range) for end-to-end supply chain visibility across [warehouses, yards, and transit routes]
Delivered a [cloud-based tracking dashboard] with real-time asset location, geo-fence alerts, condition monitoring (temperature, humidity, shock), and historical route playback
Achieved [significant reduction in asset loss and misplacement] through automated zone-based tracking that eliminates manual inventory counts
The Challenge
Before partnering with Iottive, Asset Tracking Solution was facing several issues:
Indoor-Outdoor Tracking Gap
GPS provides accurate outdoor tracking but fails inside warehouses and buildings. BLE beacons work indoors but have limited range outdoors. The client needed a single tracking solution that transitions between indoor and outdoor environments without manual intervention.
Asset Condition Monitoring
Knowing where an asset is located is only half the problem. For temperature-sensitive goods, electronics, and fragile equipment, the client also needed real-time condition data — temperature, humidity, and shock events — associated with each tracked asset.
Battery Life for Tag-Based Tracking
Attaching tracking tags to thousands of assets requires multi-year battery life to avoid the operational burden of frequent battery replacements. Tags needed to operate for 2–5 years on coin-cell batteries while transmitting location and condition data.
Scalability Across Facilities
The tracking system needed to scale from a single warehouse pilot to multi-facility deployment across different geographic regions, each with different infrastructure, connectivity options, and operational workflows.
Our Solution
Iottive delivered a complete AIoT solution under a full-cycle product development model.
Bluetooth & IoT Expertise
Designed a multi-protocol tag architecture that uses BLE for indoor zone level tracking (via fixed beacon infrastructure), GPS for outdoor coordinate-level tracking, and LoRaWAN for long-range communication in areas without cellular or Wi-Fi coverage. Tags automatically switch protocols based on environment.
Design Thinking Approach
Conducted on-site workflow analysis at client facilities to understand how assets move — from receiving dock to warehouse storage to truck loading to destination. Designed the tracking system to align with existing operational processes rather than requiring workflow changes.
Project Planning & Execution
Phased deployment: Phase 1 — single warehouse with BLE zone tracking (8 weeks). Phase 2 — outdoor yard GPS tracking and LoRaWAN backhaul (10 weeks). Phase 3 — multi-facility cloud dashboard with analytics (12 weeks). Each phase validated with operational staff before expansion.
Functionalities Delivered
Real-time asset location on facility map, zone-entry/exit event logging, geo-fence alerts for unauthorized movement, temperature/humidity/shock condition monitoring, historical route playback, asset utilization analytics, low-battery alerts, and integration with existing WMS/ERP systems.
Implementation Highlights
Sensors & Hardware
Multi-protocol asset tags with BLE, GPS, and LoRaWAN radios. Integrated temperature, humidity, and accelerometer sensors for condition monitoring. CR2477 coin-cell battery with 2–5 year life depending on reporting interval. IP67 waterproof enclosure for outdoor/transit use.
Edge & Connectivity
BLE beacons deployed throughout warehouse/facility for indoor zone tracking. LoRaWAN gateways for outdoor/yard coverage. Cellular backhaul from gateways to cloud. Tags auto-select optimal protocol based on signal availability — BLE indoors, GPS/LoRaWAN outdoors.
Firmware & Performance Optimization
Adaptive reporting intervals: fast (30-second) updates during transit, slow (15-minute) updates when stationary. Motion detection via accelerometer triggers protocol transitions — a stationary asset in a warehouse conserves battery by reporting infrequently via BLE, while a moving asset on a truck activates GPS for route tracking.
Data Analytics & Visualization
Cloud dashboard with facility map overlays showing real-time asset positions, zone dwell-time analytics, transit route visualization, and condition monitoring trend charts. Predictive analytics identify assets at risk of condition excursions based on environmental trends.
Dashboard & UX
Operations dashboard with searchable asset inventory, real-time map with zone overlays, alert management panel, and reporting module. Mobile app for field workers to scan tags, update asset status, and receive proximity alerts.
Security & Compliance
End-to-end encryption from tag to cloud. LoRaWAN network security (AES 128). Role-based access control for facility operators, logistics managers, and executive stakeholders. Audit trail for compliance sensitive industries (pharma, food, defense).
Results & Impact
- Significant reduction in asset loss and misplacement through automated zone-based tracking
- Elimination of manual inventory counts in tracked facilities, saving estimated hours per week in labor
- Real-time condition monitoring prevented temperature excursions in sensitive goods, avoiding product loss
- Multi-facility deployment achieved with centralized cloud management and per-facility configuration
- 2–5 year tag battery life validated, reducing ongoing operational costs versus GPS-only tracking solutions
“We tracked assets with spreadsheets and quarterly physical counts — we didn’t know what we had or where it was until someone went looking. Iottive built a system where every asset is visible on a map in real time, indoors and outdoors, with temperature data for our sensitive inventory. The multi-protocol approach was the breakthrough — BLE handles the warehouse, GPS handles transit, and LoRaWAN covers the outdoor yard where Wi-Fi doesn’t reach. Our first deployment paid for itself in three months through reduced asset loss alone.”

Lessons & Best Practices
Multi-Protocol Is the Only Viable Approach
No single wireless protocol covers indoor, outdoor, and transit environments. BLE for indoor zones, GPS for outdoor coordinates, and LoRaWAN for long-range backhaul — with automatic switching — provided the coverage that single-protocol solutions cannot.
Motion Detection Extends Battery Life Dramatically
Stationary assets don’t need frequent location updates. Accelerometer based motion detection reduced average power consumption by 70% by transitioning idle assets to low-frequency reporting.
Integrate with Existing Systems
The tracking platform delivered maximum value when connected to the client’s WMS and ERP. Building integration APIs from the start avoided the ‘another dashboard to check’ problem that kills enterprise IoT adoption.
Start Small, Prove ROI, Expand
A single-warehouse pilot with measurable asset loss reduction built the business case for multi-facility expansion. Attempting enterprise-wide deployment without pilot validation increases risk and stakeholder resistance.
