Key Outcomes
Delivered a distraction-free speed camera alert system using visual LED warnings on a dashboard device — no screens, no audio — connected via BLE to a GPS-enabled mobile app with TomTom’s camera database
Achieved patent-pending battery hibernation extending device standby life to 3+ months, with 2+ weeks of active use between charges
Built family sharing for up to 5 members with personal alert capabilities, direction-aware filtering, and continuous database updates
The Challenge
Before partnering with Iottive, CamCrusher was facing several issues:
Screen-Based Alerts Cause Distraction
Existing speed camera apps require drivers to look at their phone screen for warnings ironic for a safety product. CamCrusher needed a heads-up alert system that works in peripheral vision without requiring eye movement away from the road.
Direction-Aware Filtering
GPS databases contain cameras on both sides of multi-lane roads and highways. Alerting for a camera facing the opposite direction creates false positives that erode user trust and lead to alert fatigue.
Battery Life vs. Always-On GPS
The mobile app needs continuous GPS tracking to detect approaching cameras, but background GPS drains phone batteries rapidly. The companion device also needed extended battery life despite housing an LED and BLE radio.
Camera Database Freshness
Speed and red-light cameras are installed, moved, and deactivated regularly. Stale data means missed warnings (dangerous) or false alerts (annoying). The system needed reliable, frequently updated camera location data.
Our Solution
Iottive delivered a complete AIoT solution under a full-cycle product development model.
Bluetooth/IoT Expertise
Designed the BLE communication protocol between the dashboard device and phone app. The device receives pre-processed alert commands from the app — it doesn’t need GPS or database access itself — keeping the hardware simple, low power, and focused on its single job: visual alerts.
Design Thinking Approach
Studied driver attention patterns to optimize alert timing and visibility. The device uses a solid red glow beginning ~500 feet before a speed camera and a flashing red pattern for red-light cameras. The distinction is instantly learnable and works in peripheral vision without conscious attention switching.
Project Planning & Execution
Parallel development of the BLE device (hardware + firmware) and the GPS-enabled mobile app (iOS/Android). Integration with TomTom’s camera database API coordinated with their update cycle to ensure data freshness from launch day.
Functionalities Delivered
Dashboard LED alerts for speed cameras (solid red) and red-light cameras (flashing red), direction-aware camera filtering, personal alert creation via device double-click or app, family sharing for up to 5 members, adjustable device brightness, optional audio mode, firmware updates via BLE, and monthly TomTom database updates.
Implementation Highlights
Sensors & Hardware
Dashboard-mounted BLE device with high brightness LED array, adhesive mount for any vehicle, and patent-pending battery hibernation circuit. Compact form factor designed to be unobtrusive on any dashboard.
Edge & Connectivity
BLE connection to companion app for alert commands. All GPS processing and camera matching happens on the phone — the device is a display-only peripheral, maximizing simplicity and battery life.
Firmware & Performance Optimization
Patent-pending battery hibernation mode reduces standby current to near-zero when the vehicle is off. Device auto-wakes when BLE advertising from the phone app is detected, transitioning to active mode in <2 seconds.
Data Analytics & Visualization
App tracks alert history (which cameras triggered warnings), personal alert locations, and driving route data. Users can review past drives and report new camera locations to improve database coverage.
Dashboard & UX
App designed to run in the background with the screen off — drivers never need to look at their phone. Map view available for passenger use showing upcoming cameras on the route. Family sharing managed through app settings.
Security & Compliance
Encrypted BLE communication. Location data stored locally on the user’s phone with optional cloud backup for family sharing sync. TomTom data usage compliant with their API licensing terms.
Results & Impact
- 5.0 App Store rating (12 reviews at launch), with users citing ticket avoidance as the primary benefit
- Patent-pending battery hibernation achieved 3+ months standby and 2+ weeks active use
- Family sharing feature enabled 5-member alert networks, expanding the value proposition beyond individual drivers
- Direction-aware filtering eliminated opposite-lane false positives, the #1 complaint with competitor products
- Accessible pricing: device + 12-month subscription at $90 initial, $48/year renewal — positioned below radar detector alternatives
“I drive through New York City daily — speed cameras are everywhere. Other apps made me look at my phone screen, which defeated the purpose. Iottive built CamCrusher to work in my peripheral vision — the red glow appears 500 feet before a camera and I don’t take my eyes off the road. My family of five shares one account, and the battery hibernation means I never have to think about charging the device. Three months of standby from a device this small is impressive.”

Lessons & Best Practices
Simplify the Device, Enrich the App
Moving all GPS processing and camera matching to the phone kept the dashboard device simple, cheap, and power-efficient. The device does one thing perfectly: visual alerts
Direction Awareness Is Non-Negotiable
Alerting for cameras on the opposite side of a highway destroys user trust within the first week. Direction-aware filtering required GPS heading analysis, not just proximity — a meaningful engineering investment that paid off in retention.
Design for Peripheral Vision
Drivers process visual information in their peripheral field without conscious attention. A red glow in the dashboard periphery is safer and more effective than a notification on a phone screen they have to look at.
Hibernation Solves the Charging Problem
Consumers abandon devices that need frequent charging. Patent-pending battery hibernation mode that auto-wakes via BLE proximity eliminated charging anxiety entirely
