Key Outcomes

Delivered a production iOS fleet management app (HandsOn FLEET) enabling real-time GPS vehicle tracking, route history, and driver management for international logistics operations

Built a separate BLE Tool Tracker app for on-site asset monitoring, extending HandsOn’s platform from vehicles to individual tools and equipment

Supported multi-protocol IoT architecture spanning GPS, RFID, BLE, and LoRaWAN — including high-security use cases such as gold bullion traceability for African mining operations

The Challenge

Before partnering with Iottive, HandsOn Systems was facing several technical and operational hurdles:

Real-Time GPS Tracking Accuracy at Scale

Fleet management demands sub-10-second position updates for hundreds of vehicles simultaneously, with accurate rendering on mobile maps even in areas with poor cellular coverage. HandsOn’s existing web platform needed a mobile companion that could deliver the same tracking fidelity on a phone screen in the field, without overwhelming the device’s memory or data plan.

Multi-Protocol Hardware Support

HandsOn’s platform spans four wireless technologies: GPS for vehicle tracking, RFID for asset identification, BLE for proximity-based tool monitoring, and LoRaWAN for low power IoT sensor networks. The mobile apps had to integrate with this heterogeneous stack — each protocol with its own data format, latency profile, and connection model.

Scalability for International Deployments

HandsOn operates from Malta and Serbia with clients across Europe and Africa. The mobile infrastructure had to support multiple time zones, regional map providers, varying cellular network conditions, and multilingual fleet operations — all without requiring per-region app variants.

Security for Sensitive Logistics

One of HandsOn’s signature use cases is gold bullion traceability for African mining operations — tracking high-value cargo from mine to vault using RFID and GPS. This requires tamper-evident data chains, encrypted transmissions, and audit trails that can satisfy regulatory and insurance requirements. A security breach in this context has direct financial consequences.

Our Solution

Iottive delivered two production mobile applications under a full-cycle development model.

IoT Connectivity

GPS & IoT Expertise

We built the HandsOn FLEET app as a real-time mobile window into HandsOn’s fleet management platform. The app renders live vehicle positions on a map with configurable refresh intervals, displays route history with playback, and surfaces driver/vehicle status alerts. A separate BLE Tool Tracker app provides proximity-based monitoring for equipment and tools on job sites.

Design Thinking Approach

We worked with HandsOn’s operations team and their fleet manager clients to understand mobile usage contexts: dispatchers at desks, drivers in cabs, and site managers walking construction or mining sites. Each role required different data density and interaction patterns. The FLEET app was optimized for at-aglance status; the Tool Tracker app was optimized for walk-and-scan workflows.

project-planning

Project Planning & Execution

Development proceeded in two parallel tracks — FLEET app and Tool Tracker — with shared architectural components (authentication, map rendering, data sync). We delivered incremental builds to HandsOn’s Malta team for validation against their backend APIs and conducted field tests with active fleet clients in European markets.

Functionalities Delivered

HandsOn FLEET: live vehicle map with clustering, route playback with timestamp overlay, geofence alerts, driver assignment management, vehicle status dashboard, and push notifications for threshold events. BLE Tool Tracker: BLE scan and device discovery, proximity-based tool check in/check-out, tool inventory management, and missing tool alerts.

Implementation Highlights

car

GPS Vehicle Tracking

Implemented efficient map rendering using clustered markers for large fleets (100+ vehicles). The app dynamically adjusts data resolution based on zoom level — showing individual vehicles at close zoom and aggregated clusters at city scale — to maintain smooth performance on mid-range devices.

Edge Device Intelligence

Edge & Multi-Protocol Connectivity

The FLEET app consumes GPS position data via HandsOn’s server APIs, while the Tool Tracker app communicates directly with BLE beacons. Both apps share a unified data layer that normalizes events from GPS, RFID, BLE, and LoRaWAN sources into a consistent format for display and alerting.

Embedded & Firmware

Firmware & Device Integration

Integrated with HandsOn’s proprietary GPS tracking hardware and RFID readers via documented API protocols. For the BLE Tool Tracker, we implemented scan-and-pair workflows compatible with HandsOn’s BLE beacon hardware, including signal strength calibration for accurate proximity detection indoors.

analytics

Data Analytics & Visualization

Built route history playback with speed and stop annotations, enabling fleet managers to analyze driver behavior and route efficiency. Geofence entry/exit events are logged with timestamps and displayed on an interactive timeline, supporting both operational oversight and compliance documentation.

design

Dashboard & UX

The FLEET app’s home screen is a full-bleed map showing the live fleet. A swipeable bottom sheet provides vehicle details, driver info, and recent alerts without leaving the map context. The Tool Tracker uses a card-based layout showing each tracked tool’s name, last-seen time, and proximity indicator — green (in range), amber (recently seen), red (out of range).

Security & Compliance

Security & Compliance

All data transmissions use TLS 1.3 encryption. The gold bullion traceability workflow includes tamperevident event logging: every RFID scan, GPS position update, and custody transfer is cryptographically signed and appended to an immutable audit trail. User access is role-based, with fleet-level and vehiclelevel permission granularity.

Results & Impact

  • Delivered two production apps — FLEET and BLE Tool Tracker — extending HandsOn’s platform to mobile users across Europe and Africa
  • Enabled real-time fleet visibility on mobile devices with sub-10-second position updates for active vehicles
  • A Supported gold bullion traceability operations with cryptographically signed audit trails meeting regulatory requirements
  • Achieved smooth map performance for fleets of 100+ vehicles through dynamic clustering and resolution scaling
  • Reduced on-site tool loss by providing BLE-based proximity alerts for construction and mining equipment

“Our clients manage fleets across multiple countries and track assets worth millions. Iottive built mobile apps that handle this complexity without passing it to the user. The FLEET app gives our dispatchers a command center in their pocket, and the Tool Tracker has become essential on mining sites. They understood our multi-protocol architecture from day one.”

Lessons & Best Practices

Normalize Early When Working with Multiple Protocols

GPS, RFID, BLE, and LoRaWAN each produce data in different formats with different latencies. Building a unified data normalization layer early prevented protocol-specific complexity from leaking into the UI code.

Design for the Worst Network, Not the Best

Fleet clients operate in areas with spotty cellular coverage — rural Africa, construction sites, and highway corridors. We built aggressive local caching and offline capable map tiles so the app remains useful even with intermittent connectivity.

Security Auditing Starts at Architecture, Not Testing

For the gold traceability use case, we designed the audit trail as an append-only, cryptographically chained log from the start. Bolting security onto an existing architecture after the fact would have left gaps.

International Deployment Needs Localization Infrastructure

Time zones, date formats, map providers, and measurement units vary across HandsOn’s markets. Web built localization as a first-class system feature rather than a string replacement afterthought.
