The Challenge

Bidirectional Communication Complexity
Most Bluetooth trackers only work one way — phone finds tag. Hank required reverse functionality where pressing the tag button triggers an audible alert on the phone, even if the phone is on silent mode, demanding deep OS-level integration on both iOS and Android.
Cost-Sensitive Market Positioning
Targeting emerging markets like Nigeria required a retail price under $20 (approximately ₦14,800), constraining component selection, PCB complexity, and manufacturing processes while maintaining reliable BLE range and battery life.
Multi-Item Management UX
Users tracking keys, wallet, bag, and pet need a dashboard that makes it immediately obvious which item is nearby and which is out of range — without requiring technical understanding of Bluetooth signal strength or connection states.
Cross-Platform Parity
iOS and Android handle BLE background processes differently. Maintaining consistent location tracking,alert delivery, and tag communication across both platforms required platform-specific engineering with a unified user experience.

Bluetooth/IoT Expertise
Implemented bidirectional BLE communication where the tag advertises its presence to the phone and the phone can trigger the tag’s speaker, while the tag can independently command the phone to ring at maximum volume regardless of silent mode settings.
Design Thinking Approach
Designed the app for users with varying technical literacy, common in the target emerging markets. One-button pairing eliminates Bluetooth settings navigation. The item dashboard uses color-coded proximity indicators (green/yellow/red) instead of signal strength numbers.

Tag firmware runs a minimal RTOS kernel consuming <10μA in idle state. Button-press detection uses hardware interrupt rather than polling, eliminating unnecessary wake cycles.
Data Analytics & Visualization
App-side signal strength averaging and Kalman filtering provide smoother proximity estimates than raw RSSI values, reducing false separation alerts in noisy RF environments.
Dashboard & UX
Clean card-based interface showing each tracked item with name, icon, proximity status, and last-seen timestamp. Map integration displays last known GPS coordinates when the item goes out of range.
Security & Compliance
BLE pairing with bonding prevents tag hijacking. User data stored locally on-device with optional cloud backup. Compliant with Australian consumer electronics regulations and Nigerian import requirements.
