Key Outcomes

Integrated a wireless SmartSafe sensor device into a premium baby sleep sack that monitors temperature and humidity in the infant’s micro-sleeping environment in real time

Built a companion app delivering instant push notifications when conditions exceed safe thresholds, with TOG/clothing recommendations personalized to each reading

Designed the system as a non-medical wellness product compliant with Australian safety standards (TGA/ARTG classification), avoiding medical device regulatory barriers

The Challenge

Before partnering with Iottive, Safe Sacs was facing several issues:

SIDS Risk from Overheating

Overheating is a leading modifiable risk factor for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Parents have no objective way to monitor the temperature inside their baby’s sleep sack-room thermometers don’t capture the microclimate next to the infant’s body.

False Alarm Fatigue

Baby monitors that alert too frequently train parents to ignore notifications. The SmartSafe system needed clinically meaningful thresholds that trigger alerts only when conditions genuinely warrant action, maintaining parental trust in the system.

Sensor Placement and Baby Safety

Any sensor placed near a sleeping infant must be non-detachable (choking hazard), soft (no hard edges), and positioned to measure the micro-sleeping environment without touching the baby’s skin or restricting movement.

Non-Medical Device Positioning

Positioning the product as a medical device would trigger TGA (Australia) and FDA (US) regulatory processes costing $200K+ and taking 12–18 months. Safe Sacs needed to deliver genuine safety value while maintaining consumer product classification.

Our Solution

Iottive delivered a complete AIoT solution under a full-cycle product development model.

stable-bluetooth-connectivity

Bluetooth & IoT Expertise

Designed a compact BLE sensor module (SmartSafe device) that fits into internal pockets within the sleep sack, measuring temperature and humidity at the fabric-air interface closest to the baby. BLE connectivity streams data to the parent’s phone app and optionally to a smartwatch.

creative-thinking (1) 3

Design Thinking Approach

Worked with pediatric sleep consultants and parents of newborns to design alert thresholds, notification language, and TOG recommendations. Every alert includes an actionable recommendation — not just’temperature high’ but ‘remove one layer’ or ‘adjust room temperature.’

project-planning

Project Planning & Execution

Coordinated sensor module development with Safe Sacs’ textile team to ensure the internal pocket placement didn’t compromise the sleep sack’s breathability, softness, or compliance with Australian safety standards for infant sleepwear.

Functionalities Delivered

Real-time temperature and humidity monitoring, customizable alert thresholds based on baby’s age and season, push notifications to phone and smartwatch, TOG and clothing layer recommendations, overnight trend graphs showing temperature patterns, and multi-baby support for twins/siblings.

Implementation Highlights

csd-high1

Sensors & Hardware

Compact BLE sensor module with temperature (±0.3°C accuracy) and humidity (±2% RH) sensors.Encased in baby-safe silicone housing with rounded edges. CR2032 coin-cell battery with 3–6 month life at 1-minute sampling intervals.

csd-high2

Edge & Connectivity

BLE advertising at 1-second intervals for responsive app updates. Sensor stores last 8 hours of data locally, syncing to the app when the phone returns to BLE range (e.g., parent leaves the nursery
temporarily).

csd-high3

Firmware & Performance Optimization

Adaptive sampling: 1-minute intervals during normal conditions, 15-second intervals when temperature approaches alert thresholds. This preserves battery life while ensuring rapid notification when conditions change.

csd-high4

Data Analytics & Visualization

Overnight temperature and humidity graphs showing the baby’s sleep environment throughout the night. Trend analysis identifies patterns (e.g., room heater cycling causes temperature spikes at 2 AM) that parents can address proactively.

Dashboard & UX

Parent app with large, clear temperature and humidity display, color-coded status (green/yellow/red),one-tap access to TOG recommendations, and overnight timeline view. Designed for sleep-deprived parents checking their phone at 3 AM — maximum clarity, minimum cognitive load.

Security & Compliance

No personal health information collected — sensor data is environmental (temperature, humidity), not biometric. Australian consumer product safety compliance. Bluetooth SIG certified. Product explicitly classified as non-medical per TGA/ARTG guidelines.

Results & Impact

  • SmartSafe system provides objective micro-sleeping environment data that room thermometers
    cannot capture
  • TOG recommendations based on real-time readings replaced guesswork for parents dressing
    babies for sleep
  • Adaptive sampling achieved 3–6 month battery life while maintaining 15-second alert
    responsiveness when needed
  • Non-medical device classification enabled direct-to-consumer sales without TGA/FDA regulatory delays
  • Premium bamboo and organic cotton materials positioned Safe Sacs in the luxury baby product
segment alongside the smart monitoring capability

“As a new parent, I checked the room thermometer constantly — but that doesn’t tell you what’s happening inside the sleep sack. Iottive built a sensor small enough to fit in the sack pocket that gives me the actual temperature next to my baby. The app woke me once at 2 AM when the room heater pushed the micro-environment too warm — I adjusted the thermostat and my baby slept safely through the night. That one alert justified the entire product.”

Lessons & Best Practices

Measure Where It Matters

Room temperature is a proxy. The micro-sleeping environment inside the sleep sack is the actual variable that affects the infant. Placing the sensor at the right location transformed the data from informational to actionable.

Every Alert Must Include an Action

Telling a parent ‘temperature is high’ at 3 AM without a recommendation creates anxiety, not safety. Pairing every alert with a specific action (remove a layer, adjust room temp) turned notifications from stressors into tools.

Respect the Regulatory Boundary

Positioning as a wellness/environmental monitor — not a medical SIDS prevention device — was essential for go-to-market speed. The product provides genuine safety value without making medical claims.

Design for 3 AM Cognitive Load

Parents checking their phone in the middle of the night need instant clarity. The app shows a single large number with a green/yellow/red indicator — no interpretation required.

Why Iottive’s the Right Partner

  • Baby-safe hardware design: Iottive has built consumer IoT devices meeting the stringent safety requirements for products used near infants — no sharp edges, choking hazards, or electromagnetic exposure concerns
  • Ultra-low-power BLE expertise: achieving months of battery life from a coin cell while
maintaining responsive alert timing requires firmware optimization at the microamp level
  • Consumer wellness IoT: experience building connected health and wellness products that
deliver genuine value while navigating regulatory classification boundaries
